Manga

"Manga" is the Japanese word for comics. However the difference between Japanese and American comics lies in the fact that Mangas are usually printed in black and white, and simulates depth and light differences by the use of different patterns of half-tones. The reason for this difference is that Mangas are mass distributed through weekly Manga magazines. These are printed on cheap newsprints and sold at a low price, thus it would be unprofitable to print them entirely in colour. The few pages that are printed in colour are ususally drawn using watercolour by hand rather than CG. Which give them a softer and more elegant look.

Manga is a big industry in Japan. There are Mangas for everyone in every genre. As of such, the plot in some Mangas are very mature and well developed. So much so that they sometimes rival the story telling qualities of television dramas and movies.

Where to find mangas

Here are some places I go to find Mangas.

  • Shogakukan
First, keep in mind that most mangas are published by Shogakukan. If you ever want to buy original Japanese mangas ( that is, mangas in Japanese ), go there.
  • 云中漫步 CloudC.com( Chinese )
This is where I get most of my new mangas these days. They post a lot of interesting short stories and such. The mangas are all in Chinese though.
  • Manga Screener
A manga scanning/translation group. They seem to post a lot of interesting stuff. You can find H2 and Happy! there.
  • Adachi Cafe
This site is exclusively devoted to works of Adachi Mitsuru. You can find new chapters of Katsu! there.
