UTCMAC Training Schedule for Winter-Spring 2012

Happy belated New Year to all. We hope you have enjoyed your winter holidays these past few weeks. The next semester is just around the corner and the second session of the UTCMAC is starting at the same time as well.

Practice starts this coming week on January 9 (Monday), but the Wednesday practice has been moved to Tuesdays.

Training Times:
  • Mondays and Tuesdays 5-7 PM
Training Locations:
  • Mondays @ Cumberland Room in the Cumberland House (AKA the International Student Centre)
  • Tuesdays @ Multi-Purpose Room in the Koffler Multi-Faith Centre

Mondays will be focused on striking training. We recommend purchasing wraps and boxing gloves, however some of the execs may be able to lend you a set of gloves during practice. Should you wish to further pursue this type of training, we highly suggest you purchase the gloves and wraps.

Tuesdays will be used primarily for Tai Chi practice due to the room limitations.

Should you have any questions about the new schedule or requirements, feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

UTCMAC Executives

New Article: On Qing Ping Jian

Qing Ping Jian is a set of famous sword forms in Chinese martial arts. Unlike other sword forms that are named after intimidating imagery or Daoist principals, it's name is simply translated as "Green lemnoideae" sword. Like its name suggests, the characteristics of the form is known to be light on its feet, and the techniques are focused mostly on the manipulation of the sword by the wrist. It's known to share its origin with Kun Wu Jian. As far as I understand it, the Qing Ping system seems to specialize in the usage of lighter swords that can be freely used in light jabs, and can be manipulated easily by only the wrist. There are a lot of jumping and body angle changes in the air, something that can't be done easily with heavier weapons. The Kun Wu system seems to be focused primarily on heavy swords. It focuses primarily on power generation and body alignment with stable movements. It's name is also a throw back to a more ancient times (Kun Wu was the name of a bronze sword in Xia dynasty).

UTTCC is now UTCMA

We have changed our club's name to University of Toronto Chinese Martial Arts Club (UTCMAC).

We have grown as a club and our scope of martial art practice has outgrown the old title. Our martial arts practice motto has always been to absorb what is practical and disgard those which are not. However as a club our roots are firmly planted in the Chinese style of martial arts. We can only claim expertise in this material, and cannot pretend to offer correct guidance to other arts. We nevertheless continue to bear open arms to martial artists of all styles and origin. Our name name now reflects our practice.

The practice will be conducted in the new school year will be on Monday and Wednesdays, 5:00pm - 7:00pm. The Monday practice will be focused on empty hand materials, while Wednesday practice will be focused on weapon play.

The new fees are $60 for both fall and winter terms, and $40 per term.

For the veterans of the club, welcome back.

For the new students, please enjoy your stay.

Monday practice moved back to UC Quad

Monday practices are now going to be taking place at the UC Quad, effective Monday, March 14th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
The UC Quad is a small outdoor courtyard in the centre of University College.

Also, our Sunday practices continue to be held at the Athletic's Centre, Benson Activity Hall (also known as the Archery room, which is in the basement) from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Don't worry if the room is locked when you get there as one of our execs should be there shortly with the key.

Weds practice now moved to Sunday.

We've finally gotten the AC for our practices. Our Wednesday practices are now moved to Sunday from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Athletic's Centre, Benson Activity Hall (also known as the Archery room, which is in the basement).

We have access to wrestling mats, striking pads, and gloves which enables us to add a whole new dimension to practice.  In these Sunday practices, we will be more focused on practical skills including: breakfalls (how to prevent injury when you fall), partner grappling, partner striking, and sparring.

A T-Card is necessary to gain entry to AC.  For non U of T members who want to come, please e-mail us so that we can make arrangements for you to enter without a T-Card.

Monday practices are still being held at the Centre for International Experience/Cumberland House (which is labelled CU on University of Toronto maps) from 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm.  These practices are more geared towards forms, exercise, and theory.

As always, our fee for this term is $25. The first practice you attend will be free so come by and check us out before deciding to sign up for membership.
